Steward I really enjoy your offerings. This one was particularly poignant, relevant, and topical.
Trusk is deconcstructing all that was build and bled for, because a good proportion of Gen Y,Z and probably X sat on their duffs or even worse took their comfortable life for granted and voted for Trusk.
I appreciated the photo of Horton. I am always glad to meet or see another cat person. I have four myself, love them all. so does my wife, she was a dog person when we met.
I want to subscribe, I can afford to be a paid subscriber, but I rebel against the business model of subscription. There are quite a few things I contribute to, but I will not subscribe to monthly or yearly. I contribute to charities that allow one time donations, and then remember to donate monthly, but I will not subscribe. Therefore I do not stream or any other such nonsense.
We are told it is easy to unsubscribe, but it is not, and if you forget then it goes on forever, until you cancel your credit card.
Thank you for this! Having you as a reader is all the support one can ask for. Unfortunately, being an independent writer comes with its expected pitfalls, but I do it because it fills my cup and is cathartic. Please keep reading. I plan to keep my post free to share with the world.
Also thank you for the Horton compliment, the family I have built with my partner and our two cats has been filled with so much love. I am glad you are also a cat person too! We are considering a puppy at some point in the near or distant future. We love animals! :)
Lastly, Americans of the last century have been a uniquely privileged population considering the realities and span of global history. Unfortunately, that comes with significant pitfalls and glaring blindspots for all of us. I can't predict the future but all we can do is take it day-by-day while being unafraid to face history with clarity. Still, that can be hard and unsustainable and thus requires breaks.
I am a fan Stew and I will work on my subscription phobia.
I am very concerned about the future, especially since I have so many great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
I feel very fortunate to have been born before WWII and have lived through the best of times, and watched America prosper and grow, because it embraced DEI, but about 45% of America has felt threatened by the gains and inclusion of others, and are cheering while Trusk takes it all down.
I wish you luck, keep writing. and pats to Horton.
PS I would have a dog,but they require too much attention, like walking and picking up poop, and that is beyond my physical ability.
So true about dogs. Do what you can and take care of yourself!
On the power changes, it is sad and it’s human nature. We are at the hinge point about whether America is a nation cursed by its past or uniquely able to move forward because it was about ideas over hierarchy.
I am probably over simplifying, because there are other motivations at play, but let's say America as a nation is about hunger. Hunger for land, hunger for wealth, hunger for prestige and social status.
An insatiable hunger that like a swarm of locusts, has devoured everything (and everyone) in it's path., and now there is no frontier to chew upon and devour, so it is turning inward and devouring itself and installed a madman that is dead set on devouring it's neighbors
And across the great moat called the Atlantic there is a twin who has the same appetite and designs.
The other half of this cabal of madmen, is a man that was born to parents who were in all effects neo NAZI's, The paternal grandfather was and had migrated from Canada to apartheid South Africa.
The father Errol, was infatuated with Wehrner von Braun's book The Mars Project: A technical tale.
In the book when man landed on Mars, they discovered a civilisation led a fuhrer called the Elon, and so he named his son.
His father had interests in three emerald mines, and Elon inherited that interest and with it bought a struggling electric car company named Tesla.
This son is also autistic, and lacks empathy and forthought, the only thing he can think of is his own desires and goal, which is to Occupy Mars and become the Elon of Mars.
To achieve that goal, he must divert the productive, energy, wealth of America towards his personal enterprise, Space X and Occupy Mars.
He isn't as smart as he thinks he is, and as many a fool thinks he is, because as he shuts down and shutters agencies, which he thinks will enable him to redirect expenditures to Space X and Occupying Mars, he is in fact destroying the goose that laid the golden egg.
We are living off the accumulated fat of 250 years, but burning through it at hyper speed.
Musk believes in magical thinking, that the U.S. is a cornucopia that will keep spitting out dollars and productive, motivated people, as he sets about destroying the infrastructure built by happy Diverse, equitable, inclusive and happy people, people who had jobs, that knew that they could pay their rent or mortgage, buy food, travel, pay utility bills, buy gas, go to the beach or the mountains.
The fool has destroyed all of that, and aided and abetted by other fools, in the strangest political alliance imaginable, white, patriarchal, Christian nationalists and Gen X, Y, Z males of Asian,Hispanic and black demographics.
Absolutely compelling and not oversimplified at all. I really appreciated this, the detail, the history, and the examination of the human condition and the megalomania of our age. Thank you for this.

We are only human. All of us.
Keep being great and inspiring,

My two cents.
