You are not going to like my opinion here. While I laud Corey's stamina, endurance he must have worn a diaper and purged his intestines before he started, like you do for a colonostomy, it wasn't a filibuster because there was no bill on the floor. It was simply a 25 hr speech.
He did get attention and that is what he wanted. If there is a 2028 election and it is honest, then he and Gavin Newsom will be competing in the primary.
I wish he had waited and stood his ground for a real filibuster, that would have been awesome.
Filibusters came into being, as a tool by the slave states, to stop progressive legislation. When a bill was put to the floor, each senator had time to address it, and the bill had 24 hrs to receive comments, and thus the filibuster could kill the bill
Sadly, the above comment misses the message, and also the higher meaning of Senator Booker’s long sermon, because that is what it was.
We are living under an administration which has already consciously destroyed the values, norms, ethics, morality, and even the truths that are necessary for good government. The Trump administration is a corrupt criminal organization. They are liars and thieves. They are eager to destroy the country and the world for their own pleasure and profit. They do it openly. They wrap it in religion and nationalism so they can sell it along with racism and misogyny.
Senator Booker was taking a stance in a way that will draw a line between when people could still believe that Trump might still care about the country, and when people should realize the danger that this deranged, angry man poses to everyone. This was addressed directly at the Republicans in congress and the Democrats who still feel they can negotiate with Trump. It was also addressed to the people who vote for those people.
The MAGA folks have already succeed in corrupting America. They have bought half of the state legislatures, the Supreme Court and some lower judges, and the Congress has capitulated. We are now seeing colleges and law firms come under duress. We are also seeing Trump upend the entire world economy just to satisfy his greed and anger.
Historians may come to see a line drawn from before Booker to after Booker. Will you stand firm, or bow down? We have all been warned. We all will have to choose. There is no longer an in-between. Booker also made it clear, as he cited John Lewis, that authoritarians don’t give away their powers of oppression; it has to be taken, That is his challenge to all of us.
I have no quarrel with what you say, but I know a little bit about Corey Booker, he is a Clinton, Third Way, Democrat and has stood for a balanced budget. Sounds goo, reasonable, doesn't it, but the only way to balance the budge is on the back of those that need it, by cutting social services
Booker's speech was laudable, grabbed this progressive by the heart, but Corey is setting himself up, as is Gavin Newsom, for 2028., as if there will be anything but a Russian or Hungarian or Turkish style election.
We need a lot more than speechifying, we need resistance, not one days worth of protest, but ongoing balls to the wall resistance, defiance and obstruction.
Senator Booker is still a politician, and a Black one at that. He isn't as good as Obama at giving sermons, but the times call for something. He is setting an example of stepping into the fray. He follows, Bernie, AOC. Warren, Crockett, Schiff, Raskin, and a few others. Also, younger people are emerging all around the country. These are people who are leading the marches, the town halls, and young lawyers such as Rachel Cohen. People are just beginning to realize how quickly things have become so bad. The tariffs are a big help. The pendulum is beginning to swing in the other direction. We'll see.
I realize that we are in desperate need of hero's, and beggars can't be choosers, yet I chose my hero's not easily gulled or beguiled.
Not impressed with Schiff, he hasn' seen a TV camera he won't run towards.
He and ex rep Sean Mahony of NY (who was the DCCC chair for 2020) ran off to Paris junkateering, when they should have stayed put overseeing the election, the result is that NY lost four congressional seats that election, including Sean's.
Raskin, another camera hog. I really don't trust pols whose major interest and effort is publicity. You didn't mention Sen Christ Murphy.he is a fire breather that one and constantly sticks his neck out.
Bookers race, well I am not into identity politics it has already cost us and the country. MAGA won that contest, with white Christian nationalism aided and abetted by Quislings, like Clarence Thomas, Mark Robertson, Byron Donalds, Tim Scott, Kanye, Candace Owens.Herschel Walker, and a slew of Indian and Asian Americans.
MLK Jr said Judge a man on his character not his color. I take him at his word.
Don't get me wrong, Corey is one of the good guys, but just not the stuff of hero's that we need so desperately.
Maybe one will rise up. We can always hope, but hope is an anesthetic, Hopium a word made up of Hope and opium.
